Fontes del Porcía is a very wide and multidisciplinary group of people concerned about the integral recovery of the Porcía river valley, in the west of Asturias, north of Spain, where everyone is welcome.

We emphasize the integral aspect because we are concerned about various aspects:

• Recovery of biodiversity in our forests, rivers, fields, mountains and coast; gradually replacing the existing eucalyptus trees by native species resistant to fires and the rigors of climate change, allowing in turn an economically sustainable exploitation of forest areas.

• Educational for the enhancement and preservation of the great cultural heritage and biodiversity that many previous generations have left us. For example, through the organization of talks, conferences and workshops on the different aspects of the enormous cultural and biological heritage of the Porcía valley and its four surrounding municipalities. 
• Social, further to reaching full employment, we are concerned about the aging of the population and the lack of opportunities for highly trained and specialized young people. 
• A more sustainable and off-season tourism, even when dozens of pilgrims pass through our section of the Saint Jacques Way every day. 
• Recovery and protection of our cultural heritage through the conception and opening of Interpretation Centres of the Middle and Lower Porcía valley; and, of an Interpretation Centre of the Roman Gold Mining in Asturias: the M.O.R.A. Also, the reconstruction of buildings of special value such as the Ochoa Tower in Valdepares and at least part of the 20 kilometres of the water channel excavated for servicing the Roman gold mine of Salave.
• Contributing to the health of the inhabitants and visitors of the area, for example, by recovering and opening new trails, establishing a network that connects them; or, opening new parks and landscaped areas where only eucalyptus trees used to stand before.
• Favouring local commerce to improve the conditions of the self-employed and SMEs located in our four municipalities.
• Helping the four municipalities of the valley: Boal, Castropol, El Franco and Tapia de Casariego, in everything we can. For example, facilitating their international projection and collaborating in the preparation of proposals to obtain national or regional funding.
• Protect and promote the wonderful gastronomic heritage, which includes among others the production of excellent dairy, meat and fish products, and their final elaboration in many restaurants and hotels. In particular, the A Roda pork products, the oysters of the EO, and the milk and cheese that are of great quality thanks to the farmers and the care of the cattle both in our area and in the rest of Asturias.

In addition, and as if these aspects were not enough by themselves, we are promoting the development of Rural Artificial Intelligence. We are not only talking about Smart Cities but also about the needs and opportunities to develop specific strategies for a Smart Countryside, combining traditional and new technologies.

For example, our logo has been made with Artificial Intelligence but incorporating a hand-drawn oil painting. In other words, it represents the integral recovery of the valley using traditional knowledge and artificial intelligence. It thus helps us to highlight the importance of developing a new concept, that of Smart Countrysides, similar to the already popular Smart Cities although very different in terms of its needs, challenges and opportunities.

We work with the help of experts from the universities of Oviedo and Vigo, CSIC, Ikerbasque, etc.; supporting each other together with other associations and organizations such as EDES, XEIRA, ORO NO, CEBE, SEO Capeluda, OADN, etc. to which we will continue to add others.

Finally, we will continue to develop our contacts at international level because we are convinced that this association, if successful, can serve as an example to many other valleys in other countries that are being overexploited or other rural areas that are aging and depopulating.

The Fontes del Porcía association is registered in the Principality of Asturias. Fontes del Porcía focuses its resources on western Asturias, specifically on the four municipalities bordering the Porcía River: El Franco, Tapia de Casariego, Castropol y Boal.

In turn, these councils are part of the regions Oscos-Eo, Eo-Porcia y Parque Histórico del Navia.
